Due to the continual increase of the Coronavirus COVID-19 epidemic in Thailand, inputtings false or distored information, either in part or in whole, into a computer system by a person or a group of person not only cause damage to the public, the national security and the economic security, but panic among the public with adverse effects on the perception of information and the correct understanding of the public. In some cases, such false information is transmitted intentionally for purposes of taking any benefit.
The Director-General Pol.Lt.Col. Korrawat Panprapakorn announced that the Minister of Justice Mr.Somsak Thepsuthin ordered the DSI to establish its Center to Investigate and Counter Fake News during the COVID-19 Outbreak for obtaining facts to support its missions under the Special Case Investigation Act, B.E.2547 (2004) to investigate special cases or other criminal cases under its authority. The Director-General assigned a Deputy Director-General Pol.Lt.Col. Supat Thamthanarug as the Director of the Center, the Director of Technology and Cyber Crime Bureau Pol.Lt.Col Wichai Suwanprasert as the Deputy Director of the Center, and the Head of Technology and Cyber Crime Division 2 Ms. Ratsamee Seetalavarang as the Secretary of the Center since May 1, 2021.
The working group of the said Center is responsible for the following missions.
(1) To investigate and find facts for considering whether there is a person or a group of person inputting false or distorted information into a computer system with adverse effects on the perception of information and the correct understanding of the public likely to be an offence as a special case subject to the Special Case Investigation Act, B.E.2547 (2004) or other laws or not, and how.
(2) To collect and analyze data obtained either from the investigation or finding facts, make a report to the Ministry of Justice for use as information, and report to its hierarchical supervisors.
(3) To support information obtained from investigations to related government agencies or persons, and coordinate with the Anti-Fake News Center of Thailand.
